Foster Parents - The Need To Check For Suitability
Children who are not able to live with their biological parents are often taken care of by foster parents. There can be many reasons for this, from the natural parents being dead to severe problems within the family unit. Many children are in the foster care of other members of their extended families. The system is actually growing in size, despite the fact that the experiences of previous decades is showing that it has been a dismal failure so far. Education and work records of foster care children are far behind those of the general population.
The government has passed an act, in 1997, called the Adoption and Safe Families Act, which seeks to find adoptive parents for children in foster care. This system is available to children of all ages, right until the time they reach their eighteenth birthday. At this point, they are able to leave the system and live independently. Until then, the system will do its best to find the right solution, which will give the child a chance to complete their education and have the chance of a productive life within society.
The system of foster care in America has attracted severe criticism due to the statistics which how a poor performance in all areas, and the scandals which have surfaced in the media in recent times. The educational and work records of children who have been through the foster care system are far worse than those for the general population, and even worse than you would expect given that many children in foster care come from severely disturbed backgrounds. The scandals have arisen as foster carers have been found to be abusing children for many years without being discovered.
The future of the system must be shrouded in doubt, even though the government is clearly committed to adopting out as many children as possible. This is sensible, as there are always so many prospective parents who do not have children available to adopt. While many of these parents are seeking to adopt babies who they can raise effectively as their own, there is always a percentage of these who will consider an older child if they know that they will not meet the requirements for a younger one.
Applying to become foster parents is not a difficult process, and you will have a higher chance of success than you would with applying for full adoption of a young child. The system has been rocked by scandal, and those administering it know that they need to be very watchful and careful about who they allow to take part in foster care. You will need to go through a system of assessment before you get to become foster parents.
