Private Adoption Agencies

Private adoption agencies can help you to achieve your ambition of parenthood, even though you may not be able to conceive and bear a child naturally. There are thousands of adoptions carried out successfully every year, throughout the United States and the rest of the developed world. Many of these adoptions involve only local children and parents, but there is now an established system for facilitating international adoptions. Those who are prepared to look overseas will have more options open to them, but they will still need to satisfy strict standards.

The adoption agencies which facilitate movements of children between American homes have to be registered with the state in which they operate. This tightly regulated environment is necessary to prevent those completely unsuitable from becoming parents, but it can also act as a barrier to those who have a genuine case for wanting to be a parent. An adoption agency, whether public or private, will need to ask a lot of questions about your background and your life before they will consider you as an adoptive parent.

There have also been many adoption agencies set up to help potential parents find children overseas who are in need of a home. These private agencies still need to be state registered, and they also need to be up to date with the latest legislation which has tightened up this part of the adoption business. Before 2007, for instance, the laws on Chinese adoption were relatively lax, and many parents were able to bring children in from the Orient with no real examination of their activities.

The tightening up of the law now means that prospective parents have to go through a thorough examination before they are considered. It also means that agencies have a harder job matching suitable parents to children. As a consequence, their job is harder and far less profitable. Setting up an adoption agency is no easy task now, even if the main purpose of the agency is to bring in children from overseas. The Russian scandal where a boy was sent home unaccompanied on an airplane has not helped the image of American adoption.

Even though private adoption agencies operate outside of the state system in all except licensing, they are still subject to the laws which regulate the industry. Don't think that by approaching a private agency you will somehow be able to get around the state legislation which strictly makes sure that parents are going to be suitable for the child in question, and that the home environment will give the child every chance of a happy and satisfying life. Make sure you have all of your home life, and your paperwork, straightened out before you approach private adoption agencies.
